Japonisme: When East Meets West
This Kirkland Arts Center lecture explores the influences that international trade with Japan had on European and American 19th century art

Thursday, November 5, 2015 6:30-8 pm Kirkland Arts Center Gallery
The opening of international trade with Japan had a significant impact on the artwork made in Europe and the United States during the latter half of the 19th century. We will explore the influences and subsequent changes in western art as these artists began to incorporate motifs and aesthetic principles from the newly imported items. The term Japonisme was coined to describe this phenomenon.
