Kirkland Councilwoman Will Not Seek Reelection

The long-serving Councilwoman will step down at the end of 2017, city officials say.

KIRKLAND, WA - Kirkland City Councilwoman Doreen Marchione will retire at the end of her term in December, according to Kirkland officials.

Marchione represents position 7 on the Council, and was first elected in 2009; her term ends on Dec. 31. In a statement, Marchione said that she's retiring because she accomplished the goals she set when she first ran for Council.

“I have accomplished nearly everything I set out to do when I ran for election in 2009,” she said in a statement. “We annexed Finn Hill, North Juanita and Kingsgate, adopted a new ethics ordinance and code of conduct, replenished our reserves, retained our AAA credit rating, purchased the Cross Kirkland Corridor and opened the interim trail, spurred the redevelopment of the Totem Lake Mall and Park Place (now Kirkland Urban) and much more. I am proud of our achievements and it is time to pass the baton.”

Last year, former council member Shelley Kloba stepped down from position 2 to serve in the state House. Kloba was replaced by Finn Hill resident Jon Pascal. Residents interested in filling Marchione's seat need to file to run in the November 2017 election between May 15 and May 19.

“I have truly enjoyed my role as Councilmember for this beautiful and thriving city, and I look forward to opportunities to serve the community in other roles,” Marchione continued.
