Kitsch and Contemporary Art - Inspirations from Bollywood and Beyond

A Kirkland Arts Center lecture addressing the popularity of kitsch in contemporary Indian art and the influence of the Hindi movie industry.

Thursday October 29, 2015 6:30-8 PM in KAC Gallery

Kitsch, derived from the German word meaning “to throw together” (a work of art) was used to cater to the taste of the multitudes in the form of mass-produced objects of popular appeal. Indian kitsch derives its inspiration from calendars, popular imagery drawn from cinema, and posters of gods and goddesses. It has now weaved its presence and stamped its impact on contemporary art and artists where the line between kitsch and high art is becoming blurred. The lecture will address the popularity of kitsch in contemporary Indian art, the artists in whose work the kitsch element dominates, and the influence of the Hindi movie industry (or Bollywood as it is popularly known) on contemporary Indian art.

KAC provides informative presentations by historians, artists, and lecturers on art, culture, and history. Drop-ins welcome, preregistration helpful.
A discount is available for those who sign up for all four lectures. See our website for more info http://www.kirklandartscenter.org
