Making Sense of the Asia-Pacific Economic Region

Free Lecture, Kirkland Library, Tuesday, October 14, 7pm.

In 2011, the Obama Administration decided to refocus or “rebalance” its attention toward the dynamic Asia-Pacific region – which is home to more than a third of the world’s population – and in which nearly half of all global commerce takes place. This region matters to the United States: the 21 APEC member economies include 4 out of the 5 top U.S. export markets and Asia-Pacific markets purchase a whopping 61% of all United States exports. U.S. companies, workers, and consumers have a lot at stake in this important region.

The program will be presented by Monica Hardy Whaley, president of the Center for U.S. & Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, also known as APEC. APEC is the only U.S. business association focused exclusively on facilitating private sector engagement in the Asia-Pacific region.
