Marina Park Pavilion Naming Ceremony On Saturday
The City Council approved naming the pavilion the Al Locke Pavilion at their regular meeting on March 20.

From The City of Kirkland: A ceremony officially naming the pavilion at Marina Park in honor of Kirklandโs first City Manager, Al Locke, will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Marina Park, located at 25 Lakeshore Plaza.
The City Council approved naming the pavilion the Al Locke Pavilion at their regular meeting on March 20. Al Locke became Kirklandโs first City Manager in 1965 and served for 20 years. Prior to his arrival, the site where Marina Park lies today was a dumping ground for raw sewage and was not fit for swimming or boating.
โA talented city manager has a vision for the city, and works with the council and community to effect investments that make life better for our residents,โ said Mayor Amy Walen. โMr. Lockeโs vision, creativity and drive resulted in the extensive community park system that we enjoy today.โ

Locke crafted Kirklandโs first master plan for parks, setting the stage for the City to receive a federal grant which funded the development of Kirklandโs iconic downtown waterfront park in 1970. In his time as City Manager, Locke expanded Kirklandโs park system from less than 30 acres in 1968 to over 70 acres in 1980, including 12 acres of waterfront parks.
Locke saw Lake Washington as Kirklandโs front door, and he visualized parks, activity centers with play areas and a pavilion. Lockeโs efforts as City Manager made this a reality, and the pavilion at Marina Park ultimately became the logo of the City of Kirkland.
