Misleading Objection of Limited Classroom Space

Limited Classroom Space Does Not Prevent Lowering Class Size

Some opponents of I-1351 claim the initiative won’t work because there’s not enough classrooms for all of the additional teachers and districts would have huge capital expenses to build new schools and more classroom. That argument is false and reveals the opponent’s lack of knowledge of the specifics of the initiative or a willingness to lie by omission to defeat the initiative.

The initiative contains language that lays out alternatives for districts that lack the necessary classroom space. The initiative clearly allows a district without the additional classroom space to add educators who provide direct services to students, such as:

• Adding a second teacher to a classroom

• Hiring certificated staff to work as tutors

• Offering summer school programs

• Hiring additional para-educators, reading and math assistance, or other positions that work directly with students to meet their needs.

Don’t be misled by false claims of inadequate classroom space and huge capital outlays. Support I-1351.
