Man Killed By Kirkland Police Identified
The shooting happened after a domestic disturbance at a homeless camp, according to police.
KIRKLAND, WA — The King County Sheriff's Office is investigating the weekend Kirkland police shooting that left a man dead. The man was identified Monday as Derek Antonio-Sanchez, 35.
The sheriff's office on Monday said that the incident began early Saturday morning inside a tent at a homeless camp behind the Dania furniture store along Northeast 116th Street. During a domestic disturbance, Sanchez grabbed his girlfriend's 18-month-old son and refused to let the child ago.
Kirkland officers negotiated with Sanchez for about an hour, the sheriff's office said, before one officer opened fire. Police said the man's behavior was "erratic" in the moments before the shooting.
