Open House In Kirkland For 124th Ave Project

A rebuilt 124th Avenue NE will include options for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.

From The City of Kirkland: A February 12 open house will offer the public an early look at how a five-lane 124th Avenue Northeast, between Northeast 116th and 124th streets, will better accommodate driving, walking and bicycling.

The open house is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kirkland Justice Center in Totem Lake. An online open house is also currently underway. During the open house community members can view concepts for the corridor and provide feedback on them.

Kirklandโ€™s staff and consulting engineers have, since January 2018, been re-designing the three-lane roadway into a five-lane roadway that features sidewalk-level bicycle lanes and wide sidewalks.

The new 124th Avenue Northeast will also feature more accessible bus stops, and improved street lighting and landscaping. Kirklandโ€™s staff expects to complete the design by the end of 2019 and to begin construction in 2021 once all right-of-way acquisition is completed and previously awarded construction funding becomes available.

The 124th Avenue Northeast road-widening is one of three projects City of Kirkland staff and consulting engineers are managing for the arterialโ€™s corridor. Other projects include sidewalk improvements between Northeast 90th and 113th streets, which begins construction in February, and a project to add a left turn-lane for northbound drivers intending to turn west at the Northeast 116th Street intersection. It will be one of the first projects that Kirkland will use to begin defining the Totem Lake Circulator. The Circulator is the Cityโ€™s plan to establish a walking, bicycling and transit-riding route that connects all four of the Totem Lake Neighborhoodโ€™s quadrants.

The Totem Lake Gateway project will also establish a portion of The Circulator at Totem Lake Boulevard by rebuilding the roadway and wide sidewalks.
