Washington Adds 369 New Coronavirus Cases, Death Reporting Paused

Monday's information did not include an update on virus-related deaths. Officials blamed interruptions in the data collection process.

SEATTLE, WA โ€” State health officials reported 369 new coronavirus cases in Washington on Monday, but the death toll has remained unchanged since Friday. The state no longer reports new deaths on weekends, and officials said interruptions in "data linkage processes" prevented up-to-date information on deaths and hospitalizations Monday. The health department expects full reporting will resume Tuesday.

Per the latest available information, 86,638 patients have tested positive in the state since the crisis began, and 2,100 people have died from complications linked to COVID-19.

At least 3,721 new illnesses have been confirmed in Washington over the last seven days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's case tracker. That number has grown in recent days, but likely reflects a nearly 500-case backlog added to the tally Friday from Clark County.

Many of Washington's counties still show a rate of cases by population higher than the target threshold of 25 cases per 100,000 residents over 14 days. At least 14 of the state's counties remain in the highest transmission bracket. However, King, Pierce, Snohomish, Skagit, Kitsap and Lewis counties are now among those in the moderate range, reporting between 50 and 75 cases per 100,000.

As of Monday, health labs had processed at least 1,848,463 tests in Washington since the public health crisis began.

More than 1 million people have died from the coronavirus across the globe

The international COVID-19 death toll surpassed 1 million Monday, with just over one-fifth among patients in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University. As the Associated Press reports, about 5,000 new deaths are reported each day across the globe, as parts of Europe appear to be suffering a second wave.

The United States has suffered the most deaths linked to the virus, followed by Brazil, India and Mexico.

CDC recommends against Thanksgiving travel; airline employees brace for mass layoffs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released formal guidance on Thanksgiving celebrations, cautioning against unnecessary travel in favor of virtual gatherings and small dinners among the members of the household. The CDC lists parades, large indoor gatherings and shopping in crowded stores among the highest-risk activities.

According to the Washington Post, major airlines are poised to cut more than 35,000 jobs this week. The move comes as a prohibition on layoffs expires on Oct. 1, which was a condition attached to the estimated $25 billion in federal aid given to the airlines in March. The Post reports air travel remains at just a third of its usual levels.
