2018 Seattle Walk for Apraxia Coming To Pierce County

The walk will be held on Sept. 23 at 11am at Pioneer Valley Elementary School.

From Apraxia Kids: The 2018 Seattle Walk for Apraxia event will be held on September 23, 2018 at the Pioneer Valley Elementary School to benefit children with apraxia of speech. Registration begins at 10:00 AM with the Walk beginning at 11:00 AM.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a very challenging and complicated neurological speech disorder in children. This little known disorder makes it difficult or impossible for children to accurately produce sounds, syllables, and/or words despite having a good understanding of language. The Walk for Apraxia® is held across the country as a means to heighten awareness and funding in the hopes that all children with apraxia may have access to the support they need to find their voices.

“Jack was diagnosed with Apraxia at 3 years old. After a year of speech therapy and very little growth, the therapist explained to me what Apraxia is. He told me he believed it was the cause of Jack’s lack of communication and that it would require intensive and long term therapy for him to be able to speak,” shared Walk Coordinator, Jessica Brooke. “After Jacks diagnoses, I realized I needed a place to focus my energy. Apraxia Kids was the perfect place! Organizing an Apraxia Walk not only helps me spread awareness about Apraxia but also helps connect me with other families who are on similar journeys.”

Raising awareness is one of the most tangible ways that communities at large can help children with apraxia thrive. Collective increased awareness means that children will be diagnosed faster, resulting in better, earlier intervention. Anyone interested in covering this event or the story of the Walk Coordinator can contactjessicabrooke24@comcast.net or visit the event website at http://community.apraxia-kids.org/seattlewalk. The Walk is open to all adults and children. All proceeds will benefit important apraxia programs and research of Apraxia Kids.
