Camp Cougar Comes to Lake Louise

Activities included outside games, arts and crafts. Kids enjoyed tie-dyed T-shirts and Nature Walks.

Students at had a special end-of-year program in June. During the last full week of teaching, the school was transformed into "Camp Cougar." For the first time, kids got a taste of day-camp. Camp Cougar was a school-wide program of enrichment and fun for students; a real change of pace from the usual school day.

The idea for Camp Cougar was brought to Lake Louise by second grade teacher, Anita Seivert, who transferred from Lake City Elementary. The school was closed a few years ago, and its student body transferred to Lake Louise.  Many of the teachers made the same transfer.  Camp Week had been a school-wide program at Lake City, under its principal, Mrs. Mary Green.

In Camp Cougar, classrooms are morphed into "Cabins" and students select a name for their cabin. Tie-dye T-shirts were the camp uniform. Each grade level sported a different color, with the highest grade wearing rainbow-colored tees.

Some camp activities included outside games, arts and crafts. First-grader Jack enjoyed his tie-dyed tee shirt and liked playing red light/green light.  He made bats (the flying kind) in arts and crafts. Jack said he especially enjoyed the Nature Walk. He said that Camp Cougar was a lot of fun.

Lakewood and Clover Park can be proud of their dedicated staff who work hard to provide a rich learning environment for their students. Since the Camping Program was discarded several years ago, this is a nice alternative to help children experience some of the fun of camp. It would be nice to see this project adopted district-wide.
