Lakewood Computer Clubhouse Earns Special Designation

Pierce College's Lakewood Computer Clubhouse has been named a Promise Place by America's Promise Alliance.

For its commitment to helping young people succeed and thrive, Pierce College’s Lakewood Computer Clubhouse has been named a Promise Place by America’s Promise Alliance.

The designation recognizes the clubhouse’s commitment to the alliance’s Five Promises: providing caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education, and opportunities to help others.

“Being named a Promise Place is powerful recognition for the great work being done at the Lakewood Computer Clubhouse,” explained Suzy Ames, executive director of the Pierce College Foundation, which supports the clubhouse in partnership with the Clover Park School District, the city of Lakewood, and Pierce College. “We’re very proud of the success young people have achieved because of the clubhouse and the support they receive there.”

The Lakewood Computer Clubhouse is a free drop-in after-school and summer educational and empowerment program for youth aged 10–18.  Clubhouse members are encouraged to explore cutting-edge software, collaborating with other members in an informal learning environment. More than 300 low-income Lakewood children use the clubhouse every year.

The Promise Place initiative is part of the Grad Nation campaign of America’s Promise Alliance. The mission is to mobilize Americans to end the high school dropout rate crisis and prepare young people for college and the 21st century workforce. There are currently more than 700 Promise Places nationwide.
