Who really should be voting in Lakewood?
Youth should be allowed to vote in Lakewood.
I believe that the majority of adults have forfeited their right to vote. These people should be removed from the voting roles immediately.
I am not kidding.
Although Pierce County brags that 85% of voters show up for a presidential election, they seem equally delighted that 48% show up for the mid-terms. So with over half choosing not to be responsible... well what's the point of wasting stamps and mailing them ballots and voter's guides that will remain unread.

Now giving kids the right to vote - there's an idea. How about starting at age 8? Now we're talking... No .... I am NOT kidding.
Wait... you disagree? Why?

Oh... you say their parents will influence their vote. Doubtful. Remember that there's over a 50% chance that their parents don't vote themselves. People like you predicted that husbands would influence their wives if women got the right to vote..
OK, now you say that young people are not aware of the issues. Really? Define - issues. Are issues the typical mundane wish-wash that politicians talk about - buzz words - rhetoric - promises. Or wouldn't it be nice if a campaign talked about things that we care about; something a kid would understand and relate to?
But you sputter that kids won't take the time to vote. Yeah right! Kids look forward to birthdays and the associated milestones, they gather at school, they know how to read, they know how to study, and they know how to take tests. Ticking off boxes on a ballot a couple of times a year where there is no right or wrong answer would be awesome.
But this is crazy you say! Kids shouldn't vote - they aren't even tax payers! Apparently they are; especially if you believe what you read about them inheriting the national debt.
Good habits start early - but apparently there are a number of adults who never got into the habit of voting. But teach a kid early... maybe the good habit will take root.
You very well know, and I sadly agree that this won't happen. "Adults" are entrenched in their belief that the present law is adequate and kids are just going to have to wait until the disinterested age of 18 when they can choose, as an adult, not to care and not to bother.
Me personally, I would like to see a revolution. Imagine thousands of voter registrations being filled out by under-aged applicants - rejected - resubmitted - rejected - resubmitted - over and over again. Imagine youth flooding to the remaining polling places and waiting in line asking the poll workers to find their nonexistent names and then jumping back into line. What are they going to do - arrest a kid for being a civic-minded nuisance?
Who knows? Maybe some of the deadbeat adult voters will take notice and see what the commotion is all about.
