Claudia Thomas, First Black Woman Mayor In WA, Dies At 86
Claudia Thomas became mayor of Lakewood in 2006. She left city government in 2011 at age 81.

LAKEWOOD, WA - Former Lakewood mayor Claudia Thomas died over the weekend at age 86. Thomas was a longtime member of city government, and was the first black woman to be elected mayor in Washington
Thomas died May 12, according to the city of Lakewood. She began her career in government in 1995 as a member of Lakewood's first City Council. She was chosen mayor in 2006, serving until 2007. She served as deputy mayor between 1995 and 2003.
βThe city was saddened to learn of Claudiaβs passing over the weekend,β said Lakewood Mayor Don Anderson, in a statement. He served on City Council with Thomas. βIt was great pleasure to serve with Claudia on the council. She was a tireless advocate for youth and education.β

During her time in government, Thomas instituted the practice of Lakewood dedicating at least 1 percent of the general fund to human services organizations. Prior to joining city government, Thomas was a teacher in the Kent School District.
