Enjoy the thrill at one of the fastest indoor tracks in the country.

in Lakewood is the oldest and one of the fastest indoor tracks in the country.

Inside a large warehouse next to the is a windy, European-style roadcourse racetrack. A red, white and blue barrier system lines the course. Arcade racing games and race-car seating fill the heated observation lounge.

The Italian racing karts feature identically-prepared racing chassis and are equipped with powerful 200cc Robin and Subaru engines. The karts reach speeds of more than 30 mph and each is fitted with bumpers so riders can race competitively around the course.

Originally opened in 1997 in Fife, Grand Prix moved to Lakewood six years ago. Dave Lehmann, the company president, has worked in the kart-racing industry with his father since he was a boy.

Lakewood's location has allowed Grand Prix Raceway to grow because of its proximity to Interstate 5 and the military community. But the recession, like many other niche businesses, noticeably affected his racing operation.

"It's not back to normal yet," Lehmann said. "There is less corporate racing."

Still, certain days at Grand Prix Raceway are crowded. Monday's are the busiest because prices are half off. Twenty laps are $10 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and riders are provided extra 10 laps on Wednesdays.

There was a stream of customers who came in to race on Wednesday. Bryce Griffin of Lacey and New York resident Ron Ramirez dueled it out on the course. It was their first time at Grand Prix Raceway.

"I wish we could've gone more," Ramirez said.

Griffin tracked his fastest lap using Grand Prix's computerized timing and scoring system. His personal best was 18.95 seconds. All of the times are recorded on the businesses web site.

Griffin won the one-on-one race with Ramirez before a group of three prepared to hit the course.

"I thought the experience was really good," Griffin said.

If you like to race and are looking for a nearby place to visit, Grand Prix Raceway is your best option. The karts move fast and the prices are comparable to any other location.
