How to Set Goals for the New Year
Terry Bader discusses how to set goals you will keep for the New Year.

The New Year always welcomes in new resolutions, new hopes, and a fresh start to a new you. These resolutions are usually the changing of bad daily habits, losing weight or trying new things. Most people tend to forget about the resolutions and goals that will actually stick. When setting goals for the new year, it's important to remember to gradually work toward them instead of diving straight in. This is the best way to set goals for the New Year:
Start Off Small
It’s important to make good changes in your life to work towards a better, healthier self. Many people make the mistake of making their goals too big to achieve. Although cutting of junk food or going to bed early may sound easy to accomplish, it’s may be very difficult to keep up with. It's better to make small goals to work towards the bigger goals.

If your goal is to eat better, start with something like a “meatless Monday”. Instead of cutting of junk food cold turkey, you’re simply taking just one day out of the week to make healthier decisions. This will make an easier transition to a new lifestyle. Setting a small goal and taking baby steps makes it much easier to handle change.
Feeling Accomplished

By January 2, most people have broken their New Year’s resolution. Once they’ve broken it, they feel a sense of failure and easily give up. They feel that if they’ve already failed their life-altering resolution, it’s easier to just give up. By setting small goals, it’s easier and more likely to accomplish them. This small feeling of accomplishment is what will keep you on track and lead to bigger accomplishments.
Even when a small goal or baby-step is missed, there is little to no sense of failure and you are more inclined to keep going. To stay in the right direction and to continue moving forward, relish in the small accomplishments that you make and realize that a sense of failure should not be holding you back from your goals.
Meaningful Goals
When setting your goals, it’s easy to get a bit superficial with it. Many people say they’re goal is to travel more or save more money, but they don’t have a meaningful reason for why. The goals you set should challenge for self and help you grow. It’s important to sit down and really think about what you goals mean to you and how your resolution will affect your mental health and self being.
When setting a meaningful goal, imagine what positive future this will lead to. This goal should be motivating and take time to accomplish. If there is no sense of meaning, then it’s an empty goal that will most likely not be accomplished. Carefully think about how this will change toward a better self and what needs to be done to accomplish it.
