As a person new to Lakewood, I have decided to only look for the good in this wonderful city. One of the places that I have just fallen in love with is Ft. Steilacoom Park. What a gem...right in the middle of Lakewood. I know there is a deep history, one wrought with a little sadness as the city sanitarium once stood on those grounds. Forgive me, locals, as I said, I'm a newbie, I have heard several stories from lifetime residents here...but this is my perspective. The first time I took my son's dog walking around Lake Waughop, my breath was taken away! Being from Hawaii, you may think this hard to do...but there is just something special about that lake, the wildlife, beautiful wildflowers popping up everywhere, stately water lilies creating their own little islands in the lake and the trees...the ancients, so majestic, and awesome, like something to be worshipped! The mile loop around the lake is the perfect exercise course for me, the people that I pass, many of them regulars, always have a smile or a friendly greeting...it's easy to see that they too, have fallen in love with this enchanted place.
