Lumberjack Fifth and Sixth Grade Team Earns First Victory of the Season

Running back Alex Bing scores three touchdowns en route to a 30-6 victory against the Fife Trojans.

The Lakewood Lumberjack fifth and sixth grade team wasted no time turning their loss against the Tacoma Hornets into a victory in Fife against the Trojans. They won 30-6 on Saturday.

Lakewood's Alex Bing scored the team's first touchdown with a 32-yard run on the team's second drive of the game. It was evident early on the Trojans would have a difficult time establishing the run.

The Trojans scored on an interception pass by Lumberjack quarterback Zach Panui on the opening drive of the game, setting up the Trojans' only score of the game.

But the Lumberjack defense held strong from then on behind nose guard Marcus Washington and cornerback Christian Dorn, who were in their backfield all day and combined for a sack. Others like defensive end Tyson Zeutschel and linebackers Kenneth Wheeler and Khalil Lewis recorded tackles resulting in lost yardage for Fife in the first half.

In the second quarter, Bing got it going again. He scored on a 65 yard touchdown. After a failed extra point conversion, The Lumberjacks led 12-6 at halftime.

The Trojans couldn't find a way to stop Bing in the second half. He scored on a pair of 40 and 50 yard touchdown runs. The Lumberjacks then dipped into their bag of tricks by converting a fourth down play with a 12-yard reverse by wide receiver Christian Dorn. That set up a 20-yard rushing touchdown by fullback Lewis to seal the game.

The fifth and sixth grade team are 1-1 overall, 1-0 in the Nisqually League.

The seventh and eighth grade Lumberjack team played hard but fell to Shelton, 18-0.

Quarterback Javier Magalai was under constant pressure as the offensive line couldn't contain the heavy blitzing of Shelton's Linebacker core. Still, Lakewood moved the ball, including a 40 yard pass to wideout Frederick Johnson.

But an early fumble and a late interception from backup quarterback Ahmad Yarbrough both resulted in Shelton scores. Head coach Mario McRae will have plenty of work this week getting his players ready for next weeks game against the Bellermine Lions. They are 0-2 overall, 1-1 in league.

The third and fourth grade Lakewood Lumberjack football team were shutout by Frederickson, 24-0 in their league opener. The offense, led by quarterback Daniel Salanoa, moved the ball but were unsuccessufl in reaching the end zone. The defense had a hard time stopping the Frederickson's rushing attack. The third and fourth grade team fall to 0-2 overall, 0-1 league but they have six games remaining in the season.
