From Madigan Army Medical Center: Ms. Tanya C. Porter received the Secretary of the Army Award for Valor by Secretary of the Army, Dr. Mark T. Esper, in a ceremony at the Pentagon today for her early-morning actions on December 18, 2017, during the Amtrak Cascades Train 501 Derailment outside of DuPont, Wash. Porter is a nurse in Madigan's Critical Care Department, who was driving home from a night shift when the train derailed. The Secretary of the Army Award for Valor acknowledges acts of heroism or bravery by an Army employee.
The heroic act must demonstrate voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. It is the Army's highest award for civilians who voluntarily risk their personal safety in an act of heroism or sacrifice; Porter is one of only a handful of people who have received it.Porter will return to work after the weekend and will be available for possible interviews through Madigan's Public Affairs office.Madigan is a Level II trauma center, and provides care to civilian trauma victims in concert with other Tacoma-area hospitals.
