Mat Classic Wrestling Update

Lancers freshman Kiaya Van Scoyoc and senior Justus Strong-Ricco head into Saturday's competition for a state championship at the Tacoma Dome.

Day one of the Mat Classic state tournament at the Tacoma Dome has concluded. Here is a list of Lakewood and Clover Park boys and girls wrestlers who are still vying for a state championship in their respective classifications.

Lakes Boys

Lakes senior Kenny Griggs — who advanced to the Class 3A state tournament this past year and is ranked fifth according to washingtonwrestlingreport.com — will compete in a loser out match against Kamiakin sophomore Harley Kolpi at 10:10 a.m.

Ranked sixth in the 125-pound weight class, Lakes senior Justus Strong-Ricco remains in the winners bracket and will contend against the top-ranked wrestler Dylan Hyder, the defending state champion from Yelm at 10:20 a.m.

Lakes heavyweight senior Eddie Releford — a regional champion and ranked seventh in the state — will face Rabenstein at 9:09 a.m. in an elimination match.

Girls

Lakes freshman Kiaya Van Scoyoc, the top-ranked wrestler in the 160-pound division and undefeated, won her first two state matches and will tangle with No. 3 ranked Bradae Grein of Interlake at 11:30 a.m.

Clover Park Girls

Clover Park senior Angelica Mejia — who wrestles in the 145-pound weight class — is still alive and will face senior Sonja Grant in a loser-out match at 11:10 a.m.
