My Mentoring Month Resolution

January is National Mentoring Month – in case you didn't know.

I have been reminding folks of this fact for the last five years because our commitment to the Five Promises hinges on the first – CARING ADULTS – a.k.a. mentors.  Being the sort of person who likes to get at the root of things, I want to share how this particular month came about .  Below is an excerpt from Wikipedia….

National Mentoring Month is a campaign held each January to promote youth mentoring in the United States.   It was inaugurated in 2002, and is spearheaded by the Harvard School of Public Health  MENTOR, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Each year since 2002, (the president) has endorsed the campaign by proclaiming January as National Mentoring Month. The declaration has been endorsed by both chambers of the United States Congress. The campaign’s media partners have included ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC; Comcast; the National Association of Broadcasters; Time Warner; and Viacom.

Ok – great!  So with the support of two presidents, this relatively new phenomena has some steam to drive with – and who am I to not jump on with my full support?

So today I will share a resolution that I intend to keep for Mentoring month and the year ahead.  I suppose I could call it a strategy, or an action plan, or something of that sort but hey, It is almost New Year’s Day, and “resolution”  seems most appropriate.

So here it is….   drumroll please….

I resolve to write a ‘blog post each weekday – (call it a Mentoring Month Moment) during the month of January.  Each post will be shared on the Promise Blog (Twitter and Facebook) as well as the Suburban Times and Patch.  The Mentoring Month Moment will highlight mentoring opportunities in Lakewood, and real mentoring stories that will hopefully inspire folks to get involved and make a significant difference in the life of a kid.

Of course I could always use some help, ideas, and content –  and I promise to search high and low for material for each post.  Hopefully these ideas will come from you and your emails.

So – stay tuned – get excited – get ready – share this wondrous month with others.   And if you can’t wait to get involved – HERE IS A GREAT PLACE TO START.
