Washington said goodbye to slain Pierce County deputy Daniel A. McCartney on Wednesday afternoon.

PARKLAND, WA - The nation said goodbye to hero Wednesday afternoon. Pierce County deputy Daniel A. McCartney was laid to rest, capping a tragic and violent week for law enforcement in Pierce County.

McCartney died after responding to a home invasion call late on Jan. 7. He chased two suspects and engaged in a running gun battle with them. McCartney died when a bullet hit him above his bulletproof vest, according to Pierce County officials.

The two people arrested in McCartney's death, Frank Pawul, 33, and Brenda Troyer, 52, were charged in court Thursday with murder. A third suspect, Henry Carden, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head near where McCartney was shot. Troyer was allegedly the getaway driver.
