Whiz Kid: Meet Genesis Torres-Flores

Southgate Elementary first-grader is always willing to lend a hand to peers — or her mom — especially when it comes to reading.

Whiz Kid's name: Genesis Torres-Flores

Whiz Kid's age:
7

Whiz Kid's school:

Whiz Kid's accomplishment:
Genesis Torres-Fores, who is looked to as a natural-born leader, acts as a translator for her mother, who speaks mostly Spanish, as well as other students in her class with limited English skills. She reads books to her mother and will translate for her while out running errands or during visits to school. Torres-Flores and her mother enjoy learning together and are working on addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.

Whiz Kid's key to awesomeness: Torres-Fores is a patient and responsible young girl who takes pride in helping her peers, says her teacher, Karina Cuoio. In the classroom, Torres-Fores will teach a small group of English Language Learners step-by-step directions for assignments in both English and Spanish. She enjoys sharing “Junie B” and “Magic Treehouse” books with classmates struggling with reading and also helps peers with multiplication. “Genesis aims to please and help others,” Cuoio said. “I am so fortunate to have her in my classroom this year.”
