With Gas Pedal Stuck, Woman Tries To Stop Out-Of-Control SUV On Mercer Island

The accelerator on a woman's SUV got stuck Saturday morning and a 911 operator was able to talk her through the emergency.

MERCER ISLAND, WA - A driver experienced a scary scenario Saturday morning on Mercer Island: after she exited I-90 at Island Crest Way, her accelerator got stuck. The 54-year-old driver was going 45 MPH through local streets, unable to stop at traffic lights and stop signs. She traveled almost the entire length of Mercer Island before getting the vehicle under control.

The driver was able to call 911 and at the same time applied her brakes and the emergency brake. She was able to slow down the SUV, but not stop it. While police were enroute to find her, the 911 operator advised the woman to turn off the car and pull the key out of the ignition, according to Mercer Island police.

The woman was able to pull the key out, and the SUV came to a stop along the 7900 block of Island Crest Way at that southern end of the island. That address is just a short distance from where Island Crest Way dead-ends.
