Are you a resident of Mercer Island? Do you love
natural beauty, clean air, the majesty of tall trees and forest wonders? Then you have probably visited at least once our own Pioneer Park — 120 acres of pedestrian and equestrian pathways. If you haven’t, then that needs to change!
The park is owned by all of us, maintained in perpetuity by the Open Space Conservancy Trust, an organization that holds the land in the name of all residents of the Island, established by the Mercer Island City Council in 1992.
Twice in the past, various individuals and organizations concerned about the park have worked to produce a small book about the history and science of the park to help citizens better appreciate it.

The Farrington Foundation, a conservation-oriented nonprofit formed by Liz Sanderson, a long-time Mercer Island resident, has taken the initiative to republish the book in a new third edition.
Pioneer Park: A Natural History will be available for purchase this month. Everyone interested in the story of this park is welcome to come by the Mercer Island Public Library on March 29 to pick up a copy signed by the current editor, Rita Moore.
