Beware of Beavers

My Havanese, "Desi" duels with one of Mercer Island's meanest beavers. Yikes!

It started out as something we found entertaining. A resident beaver would pop up shore side or up on our driveway to visit. My little Havanese dogs would bark, they would exchange stares and we'd take pictures while we escorted the beaver back into the water. New discovery for me is how slow they move making it easy for photo opportunities.

Over the past month the visits started to escalate. The beaver's presence was becoming less of an event and more of an expectation.

Last night the tide turned when my dog Desi was barking beyond his regular territorial sounding barks. In fact he was in danger. I wasn't present for this as I was settling in for a quiet Sunday night after a busy week. My girls both had friends over and a few of them were right there as the beaver turned from a seemingly harmless rodent to a vicious attacker. In fact he pounced on the dog and managed to bite him in two places. Then he had the nerve to try to come into the house!

Six teenage girls screams were heard blocks away and the scuttle continued as we attempted to shoo away the beast. Seemingly the beaver was also hurt. He went and nestled into a canister we had on the lawn. We all watched as he waddled back into the water.

After our morning visit to the vet and two rabies shots later (barely avoiding stitches) we can only hope that we've seen the last of him.
