Lightning Safety

Next week the computer models are hinting at the possibility of thunderstorms in our area. This is hit and miss (especially that far out) but if it is a "hit" why get your name in the paper.

If you can hear thunder (which is caused by lightning) it is time to get inside a substantial building with four walls and a roof. An all metal car with a metal roof will also do. Once inside, stay away from electrical objects including computers.

Small sheds, trees, and open vehicles are “death traps” in an electrical storm. Don’t wait around to finish the next “hole” or you might be planted in one. Most lightning deaths are caused by people waiting too long to seek shelter.

Be a leader! Most people will stay in a gathering (for example, on the field in a baseball game) because they assume that if other people on the field are not seeking shelter, why should they. Be a leader and get people off of the field.

Lightning can strike “out of the blue” and hit even if it is not raining overhead. If you hear thunder the lightning is already too close.
