Covenant Shores Residents Celebrate Diversity at Walk for Rice
Area seniors raise over $1,000 for Walk for Rice

Recently, sixteen residents from Covenant Shores, a faith-based, not-for-profit, continuing care retirement community, joined 1,000 people for a 2.5-mile walk/run to raise money for the 25th annual Walk for Rice. The senior living community raised over $1,018 to help feed area Asian-American residents, 75 and older.
According to Jim Brockmeyer, fitness coordinator, “This is a fund raiser that we have been involved with for the past ten years. We appreciate the Asian influence in our area and want to help as much as we are able.”
Funds from the Walk for Rice event benefit the Asian Counseling and Referral Services (ACRS) Food Bank. With donations that exceeding $200,000 this year, the event will help those who do not have access to proper nutritional or culturally familiar foods. Last year, approximately 1 million pounds of foods such as rice and tofu, fresh vegetables and fruits were distributed to 5,600 families. The recipients make over 120,000 trips annually to the ACRS Food Bank in the Chinatown district.

The Walk for Rice event was established 25 years ago by founder Sam Mitsui and his late wife. Mitsui recognized the need of the frailest members of his community. The event has become much more however with Asian entertainment such as martial arts demonstrations, Taiko drummers and performances by the Chinese Community Girls Drill Team.
