Drone Spotted Near Blue Angels During SeaFair Performance: Report

A bystander took a video of what appears to be a drone flying near the Blue Angels. But the U.S. Navy says the drone did not interfere.

MERCER ISLAND, WA - A bystander watching the Blue Angels performance at SeaFair on Friday filmed a drone flying near the planes, but a U.S. Navy spokesman said the small unmanned aircraft was not close enough to the Angels' jets to cause a problem. The drone video was first reported by the Aviationist blog.

John Redifer was watching the Blue Angels show from the Mercer Island side of I-90 when he and other observers saw the drone. Redifer told the Aviationist that he heard state police discussing the presence of the drone.

"There were about 1,000 people on the bridge with me, including about 12 WSP officers who were there for crowd control. Some people commented on the drone, and WSP officers were pointing at it and appeared to comment on their radios about it," he told the blog.

Blue Angels spokesman Lt. Joe Hontz told Patch.com that the team was aware of the drone, but the pilots did not notice it during the show. Hontz said the drone was not close enough to interfere with the show.

Here's the footage of the drone Redifer shot. You can see the drone as a tiny speck above and to the left of the Blue Angels.
