Growing up during WW2 in Shanghai

Werner Glass, speaker at our September 4th meeting, will describe growing up in Shanghai during 1933-1947. The Glass family abandoned Germany for Shanghai after the election of Hitler in 1933 when Werner was only six. They survived a Japanese attack in 1937 and the Japanese occupation of the International Settlement in 1941. Werner attended several sectarian schools, was expelled from one on racial grounds and despite being declared a stateless person, managed to evade being sent to the stateless ghetto.

After WWII ended, his luck started to change with the marriage of his sister to an American G.I. which may have facilitated Werner’s entry into the U.S. He attended Syracuse U., earning a Bachelor’s degree, and then MIT, earning Masters and Doctors in chemical engineering. He joined Exxon in 1956 in Re-search and Engineering and retired in 1986. Werner and wife Lois moved to Mercer Island in 2009.

Bring a friend; 1030 am, September 4, at the Presbyterian Church. 3605 84th Ave. SE Mercer Island.
