June Events At Stroum Jewish Community Center
June is jam-packed with events at the Stroum JCC, from an ice cream-making class to a visit from a Sephardic jazz artist.

MERCER ISLAND, WA - The Stroum Jewish Community Center has a number of exciting events coming up in May. The events calendar includes a class on how to make ice cream, a jazz group, and an event to cook dinner for homeless youth. Here's what's on tap for June:
Adult Learning: Chai Mitzvah
Mondays, June 12 through January 2018, 7 pm
This unique adult engagement program explores Jewish learning, spirituality, and social action. Open to people from any background of Jewish knowledge and living. Meets on the second Monday of the month
J Explorers Spring Cookout
Saturday, June 3 through Sunday, June 4
Spend the weekend at Camp Solomon Schechter at the seventh annual J Explorers spring campout. We have lots of fun activities planned, including gaga, canoeing, archery, arts and crafts, s’mores, campfires, and Havdalah celebration. For Dads and kids, K-3rd grade.

Ice Cream Making Class
June 4, 2pm
Learn how to make organic, artisan cheesecake ice cream from scratch from the owner of Parfait, a Jewish-owned sustainable model, small business in Ballard. And celebrate the holiday of Shavuot with dairy desserts.
Restful Insomnia Class: When Anxiety Rears its Head at Night
Tuesday, June 6, 7pm
Anxiety can take up your whole body, mind, and awareness. And once that begins to take hold, it can dominate the whole night. This class shares perspectives and tips on how to manage anxiety so you are more able to renew, and do what really needs to be done during the day.

Greenlake Shalom Baby Meetup

Noam Vazana ‘Nani’ Sephardic Jazz Trio

If Nina Simon and Tori Amos would go a little crazier, played trombone and piano at the same time, and had the versatility to switch between North African, Sephardic and Middle Eastern music and jazz they would produce the hypnotizing sounds and charismatic vocals of this fresh talent on the global music scene. Hailing from Amsterdam and a recent appearance at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Vazana’s trio combines the ancient Ladino language with relevant electronic and jazz influences, creating a co-existence of past and present. Her new release “Love Migratio” won the ACUM album prize and is ranked #14 at the iTunes bestselling jazz charts.
First Aid, CPR and Lifeguarding
Sunday, June 11, 12pm, Monday/Tuesday June 12/13, 1pm
Get certified in First Aid, CPR and Lifeguarding. You’ll learning about the standards and you will practice methods that have been proven to increase a victim’s chance of survival in an emergency situation.
Father’s Day at the J: On the Map
Sunday, June 18, 10:30am
Calling all kids, dads, granddads, and the families that love them! Nosh on bagels and fruit while watching this heart-pounding story of the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team’s historic win in an SJFF encore screening of ON THE MAP.
Dinner at Our House
Sunday, June 18, 5pm
Do you like to cook? How about helping those in need? We’re partnering with YouthCare, an organization working to fight homelessness among Seattle teens, to cook dinner for 20 in the SJCC kitchen. Dinner will then be delivered to YouthCare’s Jackson Street facility to be served that evening. Please join us for a couple hours to help battle food insecurity among homeless teens!
SJCC Summer Camp
Every weekday Monday June 19 through August 25, All Day
SJCC Summer Camp has weekly options June 19 through August 25. Camp runs Mondays to Fridays 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. SJCC campers learn songs, play gaga, act onstage, conduct science experiments, and make lifelong friendships.
Summer Drum Circle
Thursday, June 22, 4pm
Feel the beat together, bring a drum (water bottle, coffee can, etc.). No experience needed.
Popcorn & PJ’s Community Night Movie: AN AMERICAN TALE
Thursday, June 29, 4pm
Put on your PJs and escape from the sun with a screening of “An American Tale.” Perfect for families with kiddos ages 5-13. Kosher snacks provided. Space is limited, please RSVP.
Paddle with the J
Thursday, June 29, 5pm
Try canoeing, paddle boarding and kayaking with a lifeguard on duty. Two hour practice at Herzl-Ner Tamid, across from the J.
Tot Shabbat
Fridays in June, 9:45-10:30am
Celebrate Shabbat every week with songs, challah, and fun! For families for with children ages 5 and under.
