Local Retirement Community Exceeds Fundraising Goal for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Charity

Covenant Shores' staff, residents and neighbors raise more than $4,000 for charity

More than 120 adults and children laced up their walking shoes Oct. 3 to take part during the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Warm-Up Walk at Covenant Shores, a faith-based, not-for-profit, continuing care retirement community administered by Covenant Retirement Communities.

Covenant Shores set a goal of 250 laps around Covenant Shores’ lakeside walking trail, but families, staff members, residents, and community neighbors walked a total of 760 laps, raising more than $4,000 in the process.

“What a thrill it was to see so many individuals come out and show their support for The American Cancer Society,” says Roxanne Helleren, director of resident services. “I am so proud to be part of a community that demonstrated such generosity. This dedicated group of walkers helped us not only beat our goal, but exceed it by 500 laps.”

For the residents at Covenant Shores, participating in the charity walk is just another example of their active philanthropic endeavors. Monthly, residents make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as part of 100 bag lunches they assemble that include chips, cookie, fruit and water to donate to two homeless shelters. Additionally, the Stitches from the Heart club knits and crochets baby caps, booties, sweaters and blankets. Since 2006, the club has donated more than 2,200 baby items to local charities dedicated to supporting families in need.

Building on the success of the recent walk, Covenant Shores will bring a team to participate in the Seattle Making Strides Walk Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Seattle Center.
