Sewage Pump On Mercer Island Overflows Into Lake Washington

A pump on the island experienced a mechanical failure on Sunday, causing sewage to overflow into the lake.

MERCER ISLAND, WA – A power failure caused a sewage pump located on the southeast side of the island to shut down and overflow into Lake Washington on Sunday morning, King County officials say.

Crews responded to the pump – located at East Mercer Way and Southeast 72nd Street – late Sunday morning. An unknown quantity of sewage escaped from the pump during a 20-minute period. Utility crews fixed a mechanical problem caused by a power outage to get the pump working again.

The county will sample water in the area and provide updates to the surrounding neighborhood as needed. They will also place signs in the area warning people to stay away from the water.
