• Newport council takes first look at Comp Plan (pendoreillerivervalley.com) — Newport city leaders just began dissecting a major overhaul of the city's Comprehensive Plan, a document that will guide local projects, policies, and funding priorities for the next 10–20 years. Council members debated how prominently to feature the Kalispel Tribe and non-resident input, while stressing the need to meet state deadlines so Newport doesn't miss out on crucial grants and infrastructure funding.
   

• Murder, mayhem and a ladies' society come to Circle Moon (bonnercountydailybee.com) — Newport theater fans can catch a comic murder-mystery when Northwoods Performing Arts stages "The Marquis Crossing Ladies Society's First Attempt at Murder" at Circle Moon Theatre on Highway 211. Running Oct. 9–10, 16–17, and 23–24, the show offers both dinner-theater and show-only options, promising farcical confusion as would-be playwrights collide with real fugitives on the run.
   

• Understanding Soils (pendoreillerivervalley.com) — Gardeners in Newport can dig into soil science at an "Understanding Soils" class on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Create Arts Center on West Fourth Street. WSU Pend Oreille County Master Gardeners will explain how soil forms, what makes it healthy, and practical ways to use compost, cover crops, and mulch so your Newport garden and landscape thrive season after season.
