According to the sheriff's department, nearly 10 million Americans misused controlled drugs in 2019, and studies show they are most often obtained via family and friends. Safely disposing of unneeded medications can help prevent addictions and curb overdose deaths, and prevent children from suffering accidental poisoning. Experts urge against flushing such medicines, as doing so can pollute waterways and drinking water.
