4 Pitbulls In UPS Driver Attack To Be Euthanized

The owner of the dogs surrendered them to Pierce County after he was unable to build kennels.

PUYALLUP, WA - The four pitbulls who mauled a UPS driver in September will be euthanized on Wednesday, county animal control officials have confirmed. Kevin Backlund was mauled on Sept. 13 while attempting to deliver a package at a home along 116th Street East. His injuries were so severe, one witness described them as looking like war wounds.

The owner of pitbulls - two males and two females - surrendered the dogs to Pierce County on Jan. 18. The owner told animal control he could not afford to build kennels for the dogs, which the county required him to do in order to keep the animals.

Pierce County Animal Control spokesman Brian Boman told Patch the animals are too dangerous to offer for adoption. They will be euthanized Wednesday at the Humane Society of Tacoma-Pierce County.

"There's no way we can put these animals out into the public," Boman said.
