Coronavirus In Pierce County: 34 New Cases, 2 More Deaths

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department now provides weekly updates on outbreaks at long-term care facilities.

TACOMA, WA — Pierce County health officials confirmed 34 new cases of the coronavirus Tuesday afternoon and reported two additional deaths linked to COVID-19.

Lab tests have confirmed 1,382 cases in the county since March, the third-highest number of infections in Washington, and 51 people have died.

According to the health department, the latest patients to lose their lives to the virus were a central Pierce County woman in her 80s and a Tacoma man in his 70s. Both patients had existing health concerns, officials said.

The News Tribune reports county health officials recently confirmed the first deaths associated with COVID-19 in Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula.

Tacoma accounts for the largest number of illnesses in Pierce County, with 461 cases, followed by Lakewood, with 130 cases. The health department expects to provide an update on the number of hospital stays related to COVID-19 by Wednesday afternoon.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department now provides specific information on confirmed illnesses among residents and staff members at long-term care facilities. The health department said the new chart will be updated every Wednesday by 2 p.m.
