Pierce Deputy Almost Run Over During Chase

A deputy fired shots at the car's windshield during the chase.

PUYALLUP, WA - A police pursuit of a stolen vehicle ended with a deputy firing shots into the car's windshield early Friday morning. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said a deputy spotted a stolen Honda Accord at 4:03 a.m. at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Meridian. The driver refused to pull over, then turned off the car's headlights and tried to ram the patrol car.

The deputy pursued the car and fired two shots into the windshield near the intersection of 151st Street Court E and 120th Avenue Court East. The address is near Pope Elementary School. The suspects were not hit and the deputy wasn't injured in the incident.

The car's occupants included a 26-year-old male driver and a 19-year-old female passenger. Police said the male suspect is a convicted felon on numerous charges such as possession of stolen property and motor vehicle theft. The car was full of stolen property, according to police.

The shooting caps a tragic, violent week for the department. Deputy Daniel McCartney was shot and killed after responding to a robbery call in Frederickson Sunday night.

Police said the suspects suffered minor injuries in the crash.
