Graham-Kapowsin Shooter To Serve More Than 10 Years In Prison

The 16-year-old shooter was tried as an adult in the shooting, which left two students seriously injured.

GRAHAM, WA - The 16-year-old charged in connection to a shooting last December at Graham-Kapowsin High School that left two students injured has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Ronald Ackerson Jr. pleaded guilty last week to first-degree assault and second-degree illegal possession of a gun, according to the Associated Press.

The shooting happened Dec. 5 at the edge of the Graham-Kapowsin High School campus. Two students, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, were shot and seriously injured. Ackerson fled the scene in a car, but turned himself in about a week later at the urging of his grandmother.

According to Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist, the shooting stemmed from a disagreement between two students.

The two students, identified as P.W. and D.B., met up after school on Dec. 5 for a fistfight. D.B. arrived at the fight location and found Ackerson, P.W., and a third student waiting near a car. Instead of fighting, the three allegedly drove off with Ackerson firing shots out the window.

The shooting was the second in 2017 at a school in Washington. In September, Caleb Sharpe, 15, opened fire at Freeman High School south of Spokane. The only fatality was Sam Strahan, 15, who died trying to stop Sharpe from continuing his rampage, according to police.
