Brush Fires In Puyallup Sparked By RV: State Police

Wildfires torched a long stretch of SR 512 near downtown Puyallup on Saturday afternoon.

PUYALLUP, WA - A series of wild fires broke out Saturday afternoon along SR 512, closing a portion of the highway and inundating neighborhoods with smoke. Police believe the fires were started by an RV whose tailpipe was dragging on the sidewalk, throwing sparks into dry brush in the median.

The fires were started before 2 p.m. Sunday along a stretch of SR 512 between downtown Puyallup and the South Hill Mall. Central Pierce firefighters had the fires under control by about 3:30 p.m.

Around 2:30 p.m., state police closed the westbound lanes of SR 512 near Pioneer Way due to the smoke and flames.
