Pierce Deputy's Killer Pleads Guilty, Gets Sentenced

Deputy Daniel McCartney was shot and killed Jan. 7 while responding to a home invasion in the Frederickson area.

TACOMA, WA - The man who killed Pierce County deputy Daniel McCartney in January will spend the rest of his life in jail. Frank Pawul, charged with first-degree aggravated murder in McCartney's death, pleaded guilty Friday morning.

He was sentenced a short time later to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

McCartney died after being shot Jan. 7 at a home in Frederickson. Around 11:3o p.m., McCartney responded to a report of a home invasion along the 5100 block of 200th Street East. When he arrived at the scene, McCartney chased two suspects. A second suspect, Henry Carden, 34, was found dead near where McCartney was found.

The fallen deputy was taken to Tacoma General, but died while in surgery.

Pawul was arrested a few days after McCartney died after a massive manhunt. Pawul apologized during his sentencing Friday, saying "I’m not a bad person or a violent person, but I have to pay for what I’ve done."
