Fiction Can Save a Life!
William Hickman survived his fall into the Wallace River by using a technique he learned from fiction.
William Hickman, the 13-year-old who was rescued from the Wallace River over the weekend, survived by remembering a technique he had learned from one of his favorite novels.
Young William, according to the news story in The Seattle Times, is a fan of the Pendragon Adventure Book series. He remembered his hero, protagonist Bobby Pendragon, and he remembered how his hero saved himself in a similar situation.
"He just went feet first and tried to stay off to the side and kicked off rocks, so he didn't hit his head," William told the newspaper.

Surely D. J. McHale, the author of the Pendragon Adventure books, would be glad his character got it right. What a legacy for a work of fiction!
