Diary of a Mustang: Making a Team Effort On and Off the Field

Redmond High School senior T.J. Whidby shares his thoughts on how the Mustang baseball season is progressing so far.

I finally got out of my hitting slump with two hits in our games against Bothell and Roosevelt. I can honestly say it feels like a million tons were lifted off of my shoulders. I had been stressing out so much about it that it was almost overtaking my mind, but finally I can relax and focus on keeping my streak going.

Pitching has been going great so far as I got the win in the game against Ballard, pitching two perfect innings and also getting the save in the game against Bothell. I am looking forward to the games to come and I think that the team is starting to get in a good groove.

This team is probably the most functional and “gelling” team that I have ever played on. Everybody is getting along really well and I think that we seniors are doing a good job of leading and demonstrating what it means to be a Redmond baseball player. It’s not just the stats you put up but also how you act on and off the field.

I know that a lot of the younger players are following our lead, and we need to constantly be on our best behavior and setting good examples. We have had a lot of close games this year and even though most people were expecting us to blow out a lot of teams, I’m glad that we’ve had close games. We have been forced to not take any game or any team for granted and to play hard all seven innings.

We have learned that it is truly a team effort to win a ballgame, no matter who the opponent is or how good of a day you had on the field. I am extremely excited for the upcoming games and can’t wait to write about our season again.
