Education Hill Residents Help Police Catch 'Mailboxing' Thieves

The suspects were caught near Woodinville with over 135 pieces of mail, police say.

REDMOND, WA - Call it a case study in being a good witness.

Several Education Hill neighborhood residents helped police catch two mail thieves recently. The mail thieves were prowling homes along 156th Place Northeast around 4 a.m. on Jan. 20. One suspect was driving a car, the other was getting out and opening mailboxes, police say.

Two residents called 911 to report the suspicious activity. Not only were the residents awake and alert enough to call 911, but they provided excellent descriptions of the suspects, and the direction the car was traveling, police said.

Police located the suspects along the 12400 block of Woodinville-Redmond Road. The female suspect told police that the couple - who live in their car - had been out "mailboxing" for about a half hour. Police recovered 135 pieces of mail, most of which they were able to return to residents.

After interviewing Education Hill residents, police discovered that some saw the suspicious activity, but chose not to call police.
