ENDING HOMELESSNESS IN REDMOND-WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Politics, social policy, housing policy, homelessness

Drinking Liberally - Redmond gives like-minded progressives a place to talk politics. You don’t need to be a policy expert and this isn’t a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent in an informal, friendly environment.

Our next meeting is:

Tuesday, January 12, 7 - 9 PM (as always, the second Tuesday of the month)
Pomegranate Restaurant
18005 NE 68th St, Redmond, WA 98052

This month’s topic: Homelessness on The Eastside - Who is Homeless on the Eastside, Why did they become homeless, Why do they stay homeless and what can we do about it? Homelessness looks different on the Eastside than in Seattle, and the response is also different. Why do people become homeless? The answer may be simpler than you think. Why do people stay homeless? The answer may be more complicated than you think. What are the differences across populations (youth, families, adults)? I hope to have a great discussion about root causes and individual actions to respond to the crisis. We will also do a quick primer on Housing First, Rapid Rehousing, State of Emergency and Coordinated Entry.

Our guest is Karina O’Malley, a founding board member of The Sophia Way, the only shelter for adult women on the Eastside. She also helped start and coordinates the Safe Parking program for women and families living in cars at Lake Washington United Methodist Church. For fun, she fosters kittens for MEOW and does taxes for United Way Free Tax Prep program.
