Our December topic is the current state of journalism in the Northwest and Greater Seattle area, with an emphasis on how journalists and communities can thrive together. Our speaker, former Seattle Times executive editior Mike Fancher, says he is optimistic about the future of journalism; the same technologies that are disrupting the business model of news organizations are creating new ways to fulfill the traditional public service functions of journalism. Instead of saving journalism, we need to create more and better journalism, done by more people on more platforms.
Mike served as executive editor of The Seattle Times for 20 years. Since retiring in 2008 he has focused on the nexus of journalism, technology and democracy. Most recently he was founding director of the University of Oregon’s Agora Journalism Center, the gathering place for innovation in communication and civic engagement. He is the author of Re-Imagining Journalism – Local News for A Networked World, a policy paper for the Knight Foundation and Aspen Institute. http://www.knightfoundation.org/media/uploads/publication_pdfs/Re-imagining-Journalism-Local-News-for-a-Networked-World.pdf
