REDMOND, WA — The King County Council may rename Redmond's 60 Acres Park in honor of former state Sen. Andy Hill, who died in 2016 of lung cancer.

Councilwoman Kathy Lambert proposed the name change in early July, but the measure is still being discussed in the Council's Local Services, Regional Roads and Bridges Committee.

60 Acres Park would be renamed Andy Hill Park. The park is owned by King County, but is operated mostly as a soccer complex by the Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association. The park is actually 94 acres and sits on the Sammamish River east of the Totem Lake area.

"Andy never would have sought such acknowledgment. He was humble and did not chase praise, which makes the idea of naming a park in his honor a special gift in his memory," state Sen. Randi Becker, R-Enumclaw, wrote in a letter of support about the name change.
