Our special guest this month is Nick Licata, former Seattle City Councilman and author, who will be talking about this important topic:

"Why is it that progressives, liberals and Democrats don’t engage in a battle with the conservatives on the role of government? We talk about programs to meet needs going unmet by many citizens. But that does not counter the right-wing attack on government as an entity. We are side stepping that issue because we don’t believe in our democracy."

Nick Licata is from a working class family where neither parent graduated from high school. Licata, who couldn’t read until the age of nine, was the first of his relatives to attend college. He led the local chapter of Students for a Democratic
Society (SDS) at Bowling Green State University and subsequentlywas elected student body president.

He became a Seattle city councilmember despite being significantly outspent
and the majority of the council, the mayor, and both daily newspapers supporting his opponent. Elected to five terms, in 2012 he was named by the Nation Magazine as Progressive Municipal Official of the Year and twice named Best Local Politician by the Seattle Weekly.

In 2003, Licata authored the children’s novel Princess Bianca and the Vandals. This year he published Becoming a Citizen Activist: Stories, Strategies, and Advice for Changing Our World (Sasquatch Books). We will have a book-signing as part of this meeting.

There is no fee charged for attending our meetings, but we do ask everyone who attends to 1) buy a drink and/or food to support the restaurant that supports us, and 2) contribute when the hat-is-passed to pay for our speakers' meal.

Drinking Liberally - Redmond gives like-minded progressives a place to talk politics. You don’t need to be a policy expert and this isn’t a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent in an informal, friendly environment.

See you there!

"We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace—business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.

"They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.

"Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred." ― Franklin D. Roosevelt
