Music As Therapy: a NAMI Eastside Educational Forum
An in depth explanation of the historical and modern uses of of music in Health and Mental Health. Guest Speaker Trisha Ready, Psychologist

NAMI Eastside welcomes guest speaker Trisha Ready, a Licensed Psychologist for an in depth explanation of the historical and modern uses of music in health and mental health.
Ready will give a brief summary of research on the health benefits of music, and demonstrate ways participants can use music in daily practices as a way to build rapport and contain and encourage emotional expression in patients, particularly with hard-to-reach patients.

Measurable Learning Objectives:
• Participants will be able to identify 5 physiological and 5 psychological benefits of using music as an adjunct treatment modality with individuals and groups.

• Participates will be able to identify the connection between attachment dynamics (relational, object relations, neuropsychological) and the use of music in addressing these dynamics.
• Participants will be able to identify when patients are triggered by music, or in what possible instances patients may be triggered by music, and how to address this phenomenon in the context of individual and group work.
• Participants will learn 2-3 activities using music that will be applicable to individual and group work. (i.e. grief work, emotional regulation)
ABOUT TRISHA READY:
Trisha Ready is a licensed Psychologist, currently working at Fairfax Hospital in Kirkland. She is their Partial Hospitalization Program Manager, and Adult Clinical Therapist.
Ready is doing a dissertation on Music as a Container. Psychoanalytic based research using patient-selected music as a means of emotional containment, and expression for individuals with early stage psychosis.
ABOUT NAMI EASTSIDE:
NAMI Eastside is the East King County affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. We are a community-based non-profit organization that provides services that focus on the concerns of all those affected by mental illness. Our members include families, friends, clinicians and people living with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, general anxiety disorder, ADHD and many others. We currently run over 12 different support groups across east King County for individuals and families, many of which occur each week, we provide mental health education and training for law enforcement, give presentations to organizations, schools and hospitals, have monthly public forums, provide educational courses to parents, caregivers, and individuals affected by mental illness, and we have a public policy committee dedicated to improving mental health legislation in Washington State.
Since January 2001 we have worked with all those affected by mental illness in Beaux Arts, Bellevue, Bothell, Carnation, Clyde Hill, Duvall, Fall City, Hunts Point, Issaquah, Juanita, Kenmore, Kirkland, Medina, Mercer Island, Mill Creek, Newcastle, North Bend, Redmond, Sammamish, Snoqualmie, Woodinville, and Yarrow Point.
