The Social Safety Net has been under attack for years by conservative forces out to destroy it. The antidote is to help Americans understand that the net is not charity but a commitment by all members of the community to identify and assist the most vulnerable. The strength of the Social Safety Net relies on all of us casting aside all of our previous assumptions and business practices that have honed and defined our thinking. Those old models do not work in addressing today’s most pressing societal issues. The vibrancy of our community is the strength of the collaboration of corporations, government, nonprofits and individuals.

Our speaker is Cathleen “Cathy” MacCaul, advocacy director of AARP Washington. A skilled community affairs professional with experience in strategic communications planning, community engagement, public policy and corporate social responsibility programming, Cathy has worked for some of the leading nonprofit organization including World Vision and YWCA addressing global and domestic poverty and economic justice issues. She worked for Microsoft as part of the Global Corporate Affairs team and developed outreach and communications campaigns to advance digital inclusion to underserved and underrepresented communities around the world and in the United States. She is the mother of two teenage girls and lives in Woodinville.
